I'm going to assume some knowledge of Ableton Live in this review, since I suspect most potential Bitwig Studio buyers are either existing Ableton customers, or will be evaluating Bitwig Studio and Live as alternatives. I could probably fill this entire review with a list of Bitwig Studio features that seem inspired by counterparts in Ableton Live, but in the end that's not very productive it makes more sense to treat Live's general structure and workflow as a starting point for a particular approach to audio recording and performance, and see what Bitwig does that might be new, different and compelling. Many of its rivals have been around in some form for decades, and have large numbers of devoted users, so a newcomer is going to have to come up with something pretty special to build a user base and community from a standing start.Ī first glance at Bitwig Studio reveals some startling similarities with Ableton Live: a window with docked editing panels, a 'session' view with launchable audio clips, tracks with horizontal chains of devices, and so on. Max for Live is so powerful and amazing tool I could not live without (and I guess many others will agree).ĭid several tests with projects that are about the same for Live and Bitwig (mostly simple projects without effects) and Bitwig uses about 20% more CPU time on my i7 MBP to play it. The lack of Max support is incredible disappointing. There are some good ideas thrown in (changing pitches for sample loops is nice) but it just doesn't feel solid. Playing for about 2 days with it for hours but sadly it cannot convince me to switch from Ableton Live.Īlthough it is obvious Bitwig is made by ex-Ableton coders the new approach has many quirks that slow down my process.
